Officiant Checklist for Wedding Day: Everything to Bring and Do

Wedding day moves fast. Here’s the checklist to keep you calm and prepared from wake-up to reception.

What to pack

  • Printed ceremony script (even if memorized) — two copies, in case one gets damaged or misplaced.
  • The marriage license (confirm who’s bringing it — you or the couple).
  • A backup pen.
  • Your ordination proof/certificate.
  • Water and a small snack (ceremonies with long photo sessions before them can mean hours without eating).
  • Tissues (for you, the couple, or a guest).

Timing checklist

  • Arrive at least 30-60 minutes before the ceremony start time.
  • Confirm with the wedding coordinator or point person where you should be and when.
  • Do a quick sound check if you’re using a microphone.
  • Confirm the cue for when you should walk to your spot.
  • Confirm the music cue for the processional so you’re not caught off guard.
  • Double-check where the rings are and who’s holding them.

During the ceremony

  • Wait for full quiet before beginning.
  • Keep a steady, slightly slower-than-normal pace.
  • Make eye contact with the couple and guests periodically — don’t just read the page.
  • Signal clearly for the ring exchange and kiss so photographers are ready.

Immediately after

  • Coordinate the marriage license signing with the couple and witnesses.
  • Confirm who’s responsible for returning the signed license to the county.
  • Take a breath — you did it.
